Christine Atkinson "Machine ghosts"

Machine Ghosts is a group of photographs of the aluminum waste created from a computer controlled router. Referencing spectrology, tecnicolor, and photography’s history as a scientific tool, I examine the breakdown in our experience of light and energy. Based in Los Angeles, California, my images reflect a deep sense of place, they are shaped by the lineages of the light and space movement, the film industry and the aerospace industry. In line with these, I work with both natural elements and modernist materials - embracing the failed dream of mid-century optimism and using it to give understanding to the broken paradise of Southern California. We work here, placed between the desert and the sea, the make believe and the incomprehensible, and the threat of change and the endless blue sky.
